HEC to assess funded universities' performance: Atta

Higher Education Commission (HEC) is contemplating to assess performance of all universities funded by it on the basis of their academic research, citation index in the journals of repute, patents developed by them and utilised in local industries besides originality of the research.
This was stated by the HEC Chairman Dr Atta-ur-Rehman at the foundation stone laying ceremony of Dow University Of Health Science School of Nursing here on Saturday. "Pakistan government is absolutely committed towards strengthening education at all levels and with a view to seek self reliance and meaningful development, maximum focus is at higher education and research activities," the HEC Chairman said.
Professor Atta ur Rehman mentioning that significant allocation has been made in the higher education sector during last five years claimed that 2000 percent increase is being made under the same head during the forthcoming fiscal year.
Mentioning that colleges are meant to impart knowledge which already exist, he said universities have to help post graduate students, researchers and scientists to ensure appropriate application of the available knowledge and engender fresh information on basis of their research activities. It is therefore that HEC had been constituted to support universities and research centres besides keeping a vigil on their endeavours.
