National Assembly body discusses amendments to Pemra Ordinance 2002

A meeting of the National Assembly Mediation Committee was held in the parliament house on Saturday under the Chairmanship of Dr Sher Afghan Khan Niazi and discussed the amendments bill to Pemra Ordinance, 2002.
The Chairman Mediation Committee asked the Pemra to incorporate the agreed and proposed amendments in the bill as discussed in the meeting of the committee and a fair copy of the said bill may be provided to the Chairman of the Mediation Committee, members of the Committee as well as the stakeholders.
The Chairman Mediation Committee informed efforts are being made to make an effective law for the betterment of the people of the country.
Mir Shakil-ur-Rahman, President Pakistan Broadcaster Association (PBA) also gave a detailed presentation to committee on various section of the proposed amendments.
He pointed out that the Pemra should not be allowed to seize and seal off premises without issuing show cause, first and giving reasonable opportunity and right of personal hearing to the licensee.
The committee opposed the Pemra power to seal the premises without proven guilty.
The committee recommended that the case would be referred to the council of complaints for further hearing and decision in this regard.
The committee would hold another meeting in the first week of May this year on the Pemra bill 2002 and the date and time will be communicated later.
The following members of the committee, Shahid Akram Bhinder, Minister of State for Law, Justice and Human Rights, Malik Allah Yar Khan, MNA, Samia Raheel Qazi, MNA, Senator Sameen Siddiqui, Senator Tahira Latif, Senator Muhammad Amjad Abbas, Senator Shuja-ul-Mulk, Senator Sardar Muhammad Latif Khan Khosa and Senator Kamran Murtaza also attended the meeting.
