THE RUPEE: five paisa gain in open market

23 Aug, 2005

The rupee gained five paisa in relation to the dollar for buying and selling at 60.10 and 60.20 in the process of trading, dealers said. The rupee, however, shed five paisa against the euro for buying at Rs72.80 and 10 paisa on the selling side at Rs 73.10, they added. The rupee-dollar parity rates moved both ways in the currency market on Monday, dealers said.
Dollar's rising trend persisted in the interbank market as the rupee extended its last week's slide, shedding one paisa more versus the dollar for buying and selling at 59.68 and 59.69, respectively.
The dollars' demand persisted in the market for higher payments, they added. In the coming days, the rupee might show light weakness if demand increases for dollar, they added.
If dollar comes under pressure in the world markets, the local currency is likely to depict its firmness, they said. It is also expected that if the soaring oil prices take a pause, the dollar can go up globally, they said.
In the world markets, the dollar failed to make any clear-cut direction in the absence of fresh leads, moneychangers said.
