Provision of gas to KIT demanded

31 Jul, 2005

Islamabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ICCI) President Tariq Sadiq has demanded of the government to provide gas to the Kahuta Industrial Triangle (KIT). In a statement issued here on Saturday he said despite being part of the capital KTI is waiting for gas supply since 1975.
He expressed concerns that Capital Development Authority (CDA) has not completed development works in the KIT and a number of allottees could not get the possession of plots despite lapse of many years.
He said that if an allottee wants to install a factory over there, he has to face a tough resistance from the local population.
He pointed out that there is shortage of space in the existing industrial sectors at I-9 and I-10 and no further industry can be installed in this area.
He said that natural gas is an alternative fuel for the industry and it is not possible to operate a modern industry without gas.
Alternative use of electricity put an extra burden on the industry and prices, he opined.
He said gas is an important fuel for steel industry and no re-rolling or casting unit is operating in the Industrial Triangle due to the non-availability of gas.
Tariq said that main gas pipeline runs along the Highway and appealed the Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz and chairman CDA to constitute a high level committee to look after the problems of the KIT and make arrangements for the supply of gas, development works and possession of plots to the allottees.
