Punjab market committees to be made more effective

16 Jul, 2005

Punjab Minister for Agri Marketing, Rana Qasim Noon, said 134 market committees working in the province would be made more active and efficient, as they play a vital role in ensuring daily provisions to the people. He was presiding over a department meeting at his office here.
The meeting was informed that computers had been provided to market committees to make them more result-oriented, according to a handout released here, on Friday.
"Market committees are important as they serve the agri sector and the farmers community", said the minister, adding that special attention should be paid to progressive farming, especially in areas flanking big towns and cities, so that fruit and vegetables could be produced in profusion.
He directed that special attention be paid to cleanliness and security arrangements in the market committees.
"The benefit of government reforms should reach the farmers directly," he said, and observed that reforms should be initiated in view of the WTO regime so that agri sector could thrive in the right direction.
