Significant increase in wheat procurement target

The wheat procurement during current season attained the mark of 3.937 million tons registering a significant increase of 83.24 per cent of the target. According to final figures of wheat procurement, Pakistan Agriculture Storage and Supply Corporation (Passco) has managed to procure 0.997 million tons of wheat registering 83.10 per cent achievement of the allocated target for 1.2 million tons.
The Punjab province procured 2.437 million tons against the target of 3 million tons.
In Sindh province, about 0.502 million tons wheat has been procured against the target of 0.5 million tons.
The government has set a target of 4.73 million tons for wheat procurement during the current year to ensure appropriate price to the farmers of their produce.
The production has been estimated over 21.1 million tons surpassing the target of 20.1 million tons during the year 2003-04.
Wheat has been sown over an area of 8.33 million hectares during the year 2004-05 and it is expected that production would be around 22.00 million tons.
