A crash programme has been chalked out for maximum cleaning of storm water drains before the start of monsoon rains. The programme will cost Rs five million, the City District Government Karachi (CDGK) Caretaker Fazlur Rehman told journalists at a briefing held at DCO Camp office here on Saturday.
He said the co-ordinated programme of drains cleaning, chalked out on the directive of President General Pervez Musharraf, would be monitored by the Governor Sindh.
To a question, Fazlur Rehman said drains used to be cleaned earlier also, but this time a programme has been devised which was different and unique. He asked the journalists to themselves visit the drains after a fortnight.
CDGK Caretaker said the programme has been prepared for cleaning of 41 drains, but immediately cleaning of six major drains was being started. These included Korangi Nullah, Khayyam Canal, Chakora Nullah, Kairi Nullah and Pitcher Nullah.
He informed a special section has been setup in the Works and Services Department that would carry out cleaning of drains with the help of heavy machinery. He said a consultant has been appointed for drain cleaning work so that the problem was solved with planning for the future.
He said Sindh Governor has announced Rs 60 million special package for Lyari Town under which two drains in the Town would also be cleaned.
