THE RUPEE: currency market almost unchanged

The rupee moved slightly in relation to the dollar in the open and inter-bank markets on Friday, dealers said. In the inter-bank market, the rupee maintained its overnight levels most of the time for buying and selling at 59.64 and 59.65, respectively. The dollar posted fresh gain against the major currencies following the Greenspan's signal that the US Federal Reserves might increase the interest rates in coming days, dealers said.
The rupee showed almost same trend in the open market versus the dollar for buying and selling at 60.40 and 60.45 in process of trading, dealers said.
The rupee drifted lower versus the euro, losing 10 paisa for buying and selling at 74.60 and Rs 74.80, respectively.

According to the currency dealers, the dollar's trading commenced at overnight closing rates of Rs 60.85 and Rs 60.95 on buying and selling counters, respectively.
The dollar witnessed slight decline in its demand, which pushed its value down. The dollar, at the end of trading, closed at Rs 60.80 and Rs 60.90 on buying and selling sides, respectively, the dealers added.
Similarly, the local currency maintained upward trend and appreciated its worth against the pound sterling. The British pound was purchased at Rs 111.00 and was sold at Rs 111.40 as compared to Rs 111.20 and Rs 111.50 of Thursday, the dealers added.
The dollar opened at Rs 60.65 (buying) and Rs 60.75 (selling) against same previous rate. It did not observe any further change in the second spell and closed at Rs 60.65 (buying) and Rs 60.75 (selling).
Pound sterling opened at Rs 111 (buying) and Rs 111.20 (selling) against same previous rate. It did not observe any change in the second session and closed at Rs 111 (buying) and Rs 111.20 (selling).
