Government may face tough time on law, order in National Assembly

29 May, 2005

The joint opposition is all set to give hard time to the government in both houses of the Parliament on 'worsening law and order situation' and almost unbridled price-hike and yet-to-resolved Balochistan crisis. The Alliance for Restoration of Democracy and the nationalists have filed a number of adjournment motions, privilege motions and calling attention notices in this regard. The Senate will meet for its budget session on Tuesday in the afternoon while the National Assembly starts proceedings on Thursday.
Pakistan Peoples Party Parliamentarians sources maintained that the contacts between the government and the party had again deadlocked and reports of cases against Ms Benazir Bhutto were indicative of that. Therefore, they added, the party along with its allies would put up a real challenge to the treasury on the burning issues.
On the other hand, the MMA could adopt a relatively mild tone against the Pakistan Muslim League-led government, as it was most likely that NWFP Chief Minister Akram Khan Durrani would end boycott of the National Security Council and attend the meeting on June 8.
The MMA sources conceded to Business Recorder that Maulana Fazlur Rehman was exerting pressure on the religious alliance President Qazi Hussain Ahmed to let Durrani attend the NSC meeting. The MMA Supreme Council in its May 31 meeting would take a final decision on the matter.
Coming back to the opposition business, the democratic alliance will file an adjournment motion at the Senate on Monday, seeking debate on Barri Imam Shrine suicide attack.
The ARD Parliamentary Secretary Izhar Amrohvi told Business Recorder on Saturday, the opposition through the motion, would seek a two-hour debate in the Upper House of the Parliament on the gory incident.
Those who signed the motion are Leader of the Opposition in Senate, Raza Rabbani, Ishaq Dar, Sanaullah Baloch, Sadia Abbasi, Abdul Lateef Khosa, Safdar Abbasi and Abdullah Riar.
Meanwhile, Pakistan Peoples' Party Parliamentarians will also file separate adjournment motion with the National Assembly Secretariat on the suicide attack on Monday, seeking suspension of routine business of the House.
Syed Khurshid Shah, Aitzaz Ahsan, Pervaiz Ashraf, Nayyar Bokhari, Murtaza Satti, Sherry Rehman, Qurban Ali Shah, Murtaza Satti, Imtiaz Safdar Warriach and Fauzia Habib have signed the motion.
