Environment sector to get Rs 2930.648 million in PSDP

The government has allocated Rs 2930.648 million for 35 projects in environment sector in Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP) for 2005-06. Business Recorder learnt that Rs 2625.306 million have been earmarked for 21 new projects, while Rs 305.342 million for 14 on-going projects in the environmental sector. Sources said that all the new projects would be funded by the government of Pakistan.
However, foreign loan of Rs 75.428 million would be spent on three ongoing projects, including fuel efficiency in road transport Rs 15.528 million, protected area management project Rs 9.9 million and Rs 50 million for establishment of environmental monitoring system in the country.
The new projects are: clean drinking water for all (Rs 2000 million), environment rehabilitation and poverty reduction through community participation (Rs 86.912 million), establishment of project planning and monitoring cell (Rs 14.720 million), National Bio-safety Centre (Rs 9.750 million), establishment of Pak-EPA Marine Water Pollution Monitoring Centre (Rs 24.470 million), improvement of urban environment of Chakwal (Rs 9.342 million), establishment of model park for improvement of urban environment and recreational facilities in Attock (Rs 15.1 million), improvement of urban environment of Hazaro city (Rs 18.510 million), improvement of urban environment construction of parks in Rawalpindi (Rs 9.921 million), strengthening of forest products research at Pakistan Forest Institute at Peshawar (Rs 8.766 million), activity-based capacity development project (Rs 65 million), establishment of national.
MEA secretariat and preparing national action plans for MEAs (Rs 16.093 million), conservation and rehabilitation of the Indus delta mangroves for sustainable management (Rs 16.082 million), environmental education in schools through roaming teachers (Rs 6.253 million), planning of blank areas of Khanewal irrigated plantation (Rs 6.340 million), implementation management plan for Ayubia National Park, Abbottabad (Rs 22.070 million), national conservation strategy resource centre (7.845 million), rehabilitation of rangelands of Pothwar tract of Punjab (Rs 9.743 million), national rivers pollution control programme (Rs 125 million), national lakes protection and conservation programme (Rs 75 million), forestry and watershed project (Rs 40 million).
The ongoing projects for which funds have been allocated are : national awareness campaign on energy efficiency and environment protection (Rs 10 million), preparation of national land use plan countrywide (Rs 7.017 million), fuel efficiency in road transport sector (Rs 16.470 million), protection area management project (10.9 million), forestry sector research and development project (Rs 35.616 million), coastal areas/dry and bio-diversity and survey management (Rs 12.344 million), hospital waste management in major cities of Pakistan (Rs 2.089 million), implementation of world summit as sustainable development (Rs 6.5 million), establishment of environment monitoring system in Pakistan (Rs 112.258 million), establishment of Cherat Wildlife Park Noshehra (Rs 17.148 million), provision of clean drinking water (Rs 55 million), global change impact study centre (Rs 20 million), Afforestation project (Rs 23.689 million) and Rs 12.7 million have been allocated for the mass awareness and education.
