Resolution copies of the "United Nations Commission Against Corruption" (UNCAC) have been sent to the Finance Ministry, for comments before its formal ratification by Pakistan. Sources said that in December 2000, the UN general Assembly decided to commission an adhoc committee for negotiating a comprehensive convention against corruption. The committee, which was stationed at the Center for International Crimes Prevention, office for Drug Control and Crime Prevention, Vienna negotiated for about two years on the issue. On December 31, 2003 the UN General Assembly adapted the UNCAC and accepted the offer of the government of Mexico.
Many countries including Pakistan signed the convention. The sources said that Pakistan has accepted the convention, but it has not been ratified so far.
National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has suggested that during the interval between signing and ratification, the articles of the treaty should be reviewed.
In case, the Convention necessitates the adjustment or amendment of certain laws that could also be undertaken during the period along with consultations amongst the stakeholders, the sources added.
The sources further said that in case, certain provision does not reflect the national cause, this should be conveyed to the concern quarters.
