BANGKOK: Thailand voted to accept a military-backed constitution in a referendum on Sunday, results from the Election Commission based on 94 percent of votes counted showed.

The breakdown was 61.4 percent in favour of the constitution and 38.6 percent against.

The vote paves the way for a general election in 2017 and requires future governments to rule on the military's terms.

Critics have called the constitution undemocratic.

The Election Commission has said it will announce final results on Wednesday.
