Govt starts consultation with opposition for appointment of ECP members

ISLAMABAD: The government had started consultation with the opposition parties for appointments of new provincial members of Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).

After the 22th Amendment in Constitution, the qualification of the ECP members have been expanded and now the technocrats and bureaucrats were also eligible for the posts besides the retired judges.

The ECP had postponed the elections schedules in several constituencies due to the above process.

The 12 member Parliamentary committee established for the appointments of ECP members had started its work and it had also chosen Minister for Information, Broadcasting and National Heritage Pervaiz Rashid as its chairman. His name was proposed by the opposition.

The chairman of the committee had held meeting with Opposition Leader in National Assembly Khursheed Shah and discussed the matter regarding new appointments.

According to the sources, the Prime Minister and Leader of Opposition would proposed three names each respectively for each province while the Parliamentary Committee would choose one name.

The ECP member would be selected for five years while two members would retired from the post after every two and half year on basis of balloting.
