Punjab Assembly approves Rs396.366bn grants

LAHORE: The Punjab Assembly on Thursday approved demands for Rs 396.366 billion grants for agriculture and development for the upcoming fiscal year 2016-17, turning down all cut motions by the opposition.

The session started with the discussion on cut motions from opposition members, including Sardar Shahhabuddin, Aamir Sultan Cheema, Arif Abassi, Sardar Waqas Hassan Moakal and Ahmed Shah Khagga, against grants demanded for agriculture.

Minister Agriculture Dr Farrukh Javed said a number of steps had been suggested in the new budget for promotion of the agriculture sector and welfare of farmers and cultivators.

He said the agriculture sector was facing several challenges, adding that instead of cut in budget, the opposition should come up with increase in budget for the agriculture sector.

He said Rs 100 billion Kissan Package announced by Chief Minister Punjab Shehbaz Sharif would surely benefit the farming community.

Earlier, the session commenced with Speaker Rana Muhammad Iqbal in the chair with recitation from the Holy Qura'an.
