ECP to start revision of electoral rules from Aug 1: Surraya Jamal

PESHAWAR: Additional Director General Public Relations, Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) Surraya Jamal Tuesday said that the commission will commence revision of electoral rules from August 1, 2016 to create awareness among the voters for improving turnout on Election Day.

Addressing a consultative meeting with media here at provincial election commission office, she said that since the turn out of voting in different areas was noted low, therefore, the ECP was mulling to create awareness among people in this regard.

She said that everyone holds the right to cast vote, adding that the turn-out in General Elections remained 50 percent and it became even low in by-poll despite the efforts to increase the target to 70 percent.

She said that if the turnout of women in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa remained low due to restrictions or other issues, the same was also recorded even below in Karachi during general election, she added.

Surraya said that the ECP recorded overall 16 percent difference between turnout of male and female during the general election.

She emphasized upon creating awareness to allow women to use their right to vote.

She said that ECP is in contact with NADRA for registration of voters and electoral list for facilitation of voters as well the election commission.

She suggested that a chapter on importance of vote should be included in educational curriculum at all level.

She urged media to play its pivotal role in creating awareness among masses about casting vote and its' benefits.
