Wheat prices shoot up

12 May, 2004

Wheat prices have shoot up due to storage and black marketing of wheat by influential businessmen in several district of interior Sindh including Badin.
According to reports, wheat is being sold at Rs 425 per 40kg against government rates of Rs 350 per 40kg, due to which growers sold their wheat to private purchasers instead of government.
This attitude of growers resulted in government and food department failure to achieve target of wheat procurement.
Businessmen already stored a sound stock of wheat by purchasing directly from growers, and now reduction of wheat prices in the Sindh seemed impossible.
