Alastair Campbell pelted with eggs

22 Apr, 2004

Alastair Campbell, former spokesman for British Prime Minister Tony Blair, was pelted with eggs by student protestors at a rally in south-western Bristol, university sources said on Wednesday.
Campbell was leaving a student meeting on Tuesday evening at the City of Bristol College when a group of anti-war demonstrators hurled eggs at him.
The former master of spin, who was one of Blair's closest aides until he stepped down last August, escaped yolk-free but his car was hit.
"We actively encourage students to participate in healthy debate but we do not condone yesterday's isolated incident," said Kath Tudor, spokeswoman for the university.
Campbell resigned amid controversy surrounding the US-led war on Iraq and the suicide of David Kelly, the weapons expert at the heart of charges that the British government, and Campbell himself, had "sexed up" intelligence on Iraq.
