A Sudanese court has sentenced the Khartoum bureau chief of television channel Al-Jazeera to one month in jail and a fine equivalent to 400 dollars for false reporting, his lawyer said.
Defence lawyer Abdul Salam Gizouli said he had asked for the jail sentence against Islam Salih to be suspended, adding that he would appeal against the sentence which was passed on Thursday.
Salih was arrested in December and released on bail a few days later. His trial opened on February 28 before North Khartoum criminal court on charges of defaming the state and false reporting.
