'Price hike chief factor for growing suicide cases'

02 Mar, 2004

The government has added fuel to fire to aggravate the economic and social sufferings of the working class by raising the price of flour up to Rs 15 per kilo, petroleum and kerosene prices and proposing enhancement in water charges up to 40 percent.
Pakistan Workers Confederation (PWC) president Gulzar Chaudhry stated this while addressing a meeting of trade union representatives here on Monday.
Gulzar maintained that poor people are committing suicide due to escalating price hike of essential commodities, and growing unemployment and poverty.
He alleged that the present rulers are safeguarding the interests of the capitalists, feudal lords, assembly members and leading luxurious lives.
Pakistan Workers Confederation chairman Muhammad Yaqoob urged President Musharraf to take steps for bringing down the prices of essential commodities and utilities.
He demanded of the government to take steps to alleviate poverty and also raise wages of the workers.
