Speakers at a symposium have said that Pakistani engineers are fully capable of handling complicated jobs and prepared to undertake assignments in international markets.
The Chairman of the Pakistan Engineering Council (PEG), Engr. Dr Mohammad Akram Shaikh, addressing the inaugural session of the 19th Multi-topic International Symposium 2004 on Friday, said that the performance of engineering sector in automotive, electrical as well as mechanical goods, steel and steel products, domestic appliances were appreciable.
The two-day symposium has been organised by the Institution of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Pakistan (JEEP), Karachi Centre.
Dr Shaikh, who is also the Executive Director of the Higher Education Commission (HEC), pointed out that in the past 18 months, the engineering industry attained an average growth of about 30 percent, which was really appreciable.
He said that the performance of engineering sector in automotive, electrical as well as mechanical goods, steel and steel products, domestic appliances was unprecedented. He said that they would have to improve and streamline their "economic highway" so that their engineers be able to exhibit their "driving skills."
Dr Shaikh said that with improved infrastructure, technological, legal, financial and intellectual aspects, the country would be able to attain a rapid growth.
He said that the total number of engineers in Pakistan was around 100,000.
The PEC chief was of the view that with the accelerated growth in the country, they would be requiring much more engineers to help cater to our needs.
He said that engineers had big role to play towards the national development in Pakistan.
In his welcome address, the Chairman of IEEEP, Karachi Centre, Engr. Syed Khursheed Pervez, said that the body of the engineers had been very active during the past two decades.
He was of the view that the engineering community needed special attention and in particular the electrical and electronics engineers needed to join hand and share their experiences more often.
