Government to mull withdrawal of toll tax exemption to army men: senate assured

19 Feb, 2004

The Minister for Communications, Ahmed Ali, on Wednesday assured the House that the ministry would consider withdrawal of exemption of toll tax to the military personnel.
The minister gave this assurance to the House in response to a question by PPPP Senator Farhatullah Babar as to why the military personnel not be made to pay toll tax in order to contribute to nation building.
The PPPP senator reminded the Senate Chairman Mohammad-mian Soomro that a resolution, not entertained in the previous session, had urged the House that the exemption to the armed forces be withdrawn.
Earlier, defending the collection of toll tax, the minister said that this was necessary for generation of funds to carry out repairs of highways.
"All the people should pay toll tax to enable the ministry to maintain the highways," he added.
