Journalists' role

16 Feb, 2004

Talking about the well-being and security of the country one must not ignore the role of media in this respect.
The media plays a major role in the country's affairs within the country and the rest of the world. Because media, including both electronic and print are the main source for the people around the world to know what's going on in the globe, including their own country.
Viewing this every channel and newspaper wants to give news - breaking news as early as possible before any other medium discloses it.
In this race some journalists have forgotten their role and without considering their country's interest they just want to be the first to give the news and do not bother to go deep into the matter and never think of the after-effects of the news and its consequences, which may lead the Nation to a dead-end.
The leak that has been made by Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan or whatever he, and his colleagues did, whether it was in the country's interest or not is another debate but such news that are related to the country's security must not go unchecked in the media.
The government must form a committee to have a check and balance in this regard and only this committee should issue news relating to the country's secrets or highly sensitive issues and that news release must be provided to all the newspapers and media to print and broadcast.
It is very important as when our journalists have forgotten their responsibility and are not clear about their role in the society and world over they must be guided and trained in this respect, as we are for the Nation. If there is no Nation we have no identity either.
