Prime Minister Jamali on Saturday expressed optimism about the future of democracy in Pakistan but cautioned that the parliamentarians should prove with their conduct in the house that they 'deserve' their status as elected representatives, says a press release issued here.
The Prime Minister urged the opposition to show positive attitude in the forthcoming session of Parliament.
He reiterated the resolve of his government to take opposition along on each and every issue.
After his meeting with National Assembly Speaker Amir Hussain, Jamali said, "The sanctity of the parliament and constitution was very dear to all parliamentarians but at the same time they should prove by their conduct and attitude that they deserve the responsibilities vested upon them by the electorates."
The Prime Minister and NA speaker discussed at length various scenarios that can possibly unfold on the floor of the house in the wake of opposition's decision to requisite National Assembly session in order to discuss the situation arising due to the arrests of nuclear scientists and confession of proliferation by top scientist Dr A Q Khan.
The government is also expected to summon the National Assembly session to pass the National Security Council bill as approved by the federal cabinet recently. The bill might, however originate in the Senate, which is meeting on February 13.
The two also discussed the progress in the formation of standing committees with a view to finalising the names of parliamentarians to these bodies, which has remained a hanging fire for almost a year now.
The opposition rejected the earlier nominations to these committees, saying they were under-represented.
Jamali on the occasion underlined the important role of opposition to have check on the activities of government.
Later, the PML President Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain and Political Assistant to Prime Minister, Rana Nazir Ahmed Khan joined the meeting.-PR
