Vegetable and fruit prices shoot up

Market forces that generally play havoc, resulting in high price spiral particularly in days of festivities and rituals, are again active, as prices of vegetables and fruits have witnessed sudden rise ahead of Eid.
Onion, which was being sold at Rs 12 per kilogram a few days ago, has risen to Rs 18 per kg. Similarly, tomato is being sold at Rs 20 per kg and ginger at Rs 80 per kg.
A vegetable vendor told this scribe that there is a practice that price of onion, tomato, lemon, ginger etc increase every year ahead of Eid. The big dealers are responsible for this hike, as they are selling the commodity to vendors on high rates.
