GST relief on security equipment for President House

13 Jan, 2004

The government has given exemption of General Sales Tax (GST) on the import of communication equipment to be installed at the President House for beefing up the security apparatus.
The Central Board of Revenue (CBR) on Monday issued SRO 16(I)/2004 to exempt 30 walkie-talkie sets from GST to be used by Intelligence Bureau at the President House for security purposes. Motorola GP-38 sets were imported vide Airways Bill No 214-75549574 of December 12, 2003.
The CBR has informed all concerned that the equipment should exclusively be used for the purpose for which it was imported, and the same shall not be sold or otherwise disposed of.
Provided that in case of non-compliance of the aforementioned condition, the amount of sales tax, as leviable at the time of import, will be charged in addition to any action as warranted under the Sales Tax Act, 1990.
The tax officials have used powers conferred by clause (a) of sub-section (2) of section 13 of the Sales Tax Act, 1990 to implement the decision.
