CDGL to set up children houses for orphans

01 Jan, 2004

The City District Government Lahore (CDGL) has planned to establish 'children houses' in the backward areas so that orphan children could become useful citizens of the society.
These houses, which would be set up in collaboration with Unicef and Social Welfare Department, would provide proper educational and medical facilities to the orphans.
This was stated by Naib Nazim CDG Farooq Amjad Mir while addressing the meeting of Punjab Commission for Child Welfare and Development (PCCWD) organised by Punjab Social Welfare Department in collaboration with Unicef here on Wednesday. Highlighting various issues on 'Child Protection and Emerging Trends', Mir said that the government would support those children who were involved in beggary.
According to a study, about 2500 children are forced to adopt begging, which has turned a profession.
The government is determined to discourage the menace of beggary and has planned to protect the basic rights of the children.
Director (programmes) Social Welfare Women Development and Baitul Mal Shahida Kark Waheed, Advisor to Punjab Government Faiza Asghar and Programme Officer Unicef Resham Shamshed H. Qureshhi also spoke on the occasion.
