Inflation slides down to 3.2pc

ISLAMABAD: Inflation slid down to 3.2 per cent in May from 4.2 per cent in the same month of the year 2015, Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) said here Wednesday. .

On month-on-month basis, the inflation measured through Consumer Price Index (CPI) decreased by 0.2 per cent in May over April as against the increase of 1.1 per cent in April over preceding month.

According to the data, average inflation of the period July-May 2015-16 decreased by 2.82 per cent over same period of last year while it was recorded at 4.65 per cent in July-May, 2014-15 as compared to the preceding year.

Similarly the core inflation measured by non-food non-energy CPI increased by 4.6 per cent on year-on-year basis in May 2016 as compared to increase of 4.4 per cent in the previous month and 4.9 per cent in May 2015.

On month-on-month basis, it increased by 0.2 per cent in May 2016 as compared to increase of 1.1 per cent in previous month and no change in May 2015.

Core inflation, measured by 20 per cent weighted trimmed mean CPI (Core Trimmed) increased by 3.6 per cent on year-on-year basis in May 2016 as compared to 3.8 per cent in the previous month and by 3.9 per cent in May 2015.

On month-on-month basis, it increased by 0.2 per cent in May 2016 as compared to an increase of 0.6 per cent in the previous month and 0.1 per cent in May 2015.

SPI inflation on year on year basis increased by 0.6 per cent in May 2016 as compared to an increase of 2.9 per cent a month earlier and increase of 1.2 per cent in May 2015.

On MoM basis, it decreased by 1.0 per cent in May 2016 as compared to a decrease of 0.1 per cent a month earlier and an increase of 1.3 per cent in May,2015.

Whole sale Price Index (WPI) inflation on YoY basis showed no change in May 2016 as compared to an increase of 0.6 per cent a month earlier and a decrease of 1.8 per cent in May 2015.

WPI inflation on MoM basis increased by 0.6 per cent in May 2016 as compared to increase of 1.3 per cent a month earlier and an increase of 1.1 per cent in May 2015.
