ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High (IHC) Wednesday sought reply from the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) in a plea challenging stopping notification of the election of UC-31 Jacobabad chairman and vice cahairman.

The bench comprising Justice Noorul Haq N Qureshi and Justice Athir Minallah heard the petition filed by Abdul Qayyom and Abdul Razzaq who were elected as chairman and vice chairman, but their notification had been withheld.

During the course of proceedings, counsel for the petitioners apprised the court that his client had submitted party ticket of Jamiat Ulema Islam (JUI) to allot him party sign `Book' but on election day it was revealed that he was considered as an independent candidate with sign of `Baja' (horn).

Despite that irregularity, all the candidates contested the election and his client got the highest number of votes irrespective of the new sign, but the returning officer stopped the results without assigning any reason and directed for re-poll in the constituency, the lawyer said.

The counsel requested the court to direct the ECP to issue the notification of winning candidates.

The court while issuing the notice to ECP and contesting candidates sought reply from the ECP and adjourned the matter.
