WELLINGTON: Australia were 147-3 at stumps in reply to New Zealand's 183 on the opening day of the first Test in Wellington on Friday.
Steve Smith made 71 and Usman Khawaja was not out 57.
Mark Craig top-scored for New Zealand with 41 not out while Josh Hazlewood took four for 42.
