Seasoned playwright/drama writer Fatima Suraiyya Bajia passes away

KARACHI: Seasoned playwright and drama writer of the country, Fatima Suraiyya, popularly known Bajia, passed away here Wednesday evening after protracted illness at the age of 85.

Born in Hyderabad Deccan state of undivided India on September one, 1930, the lady was also known well and respected for social work and support for series of welfare schemes for marginalized sections of the society.

Fatima Suraiyya Bajia, suffering from oral cancer for quite some time, was recognized for her literary as well as public welfare pursuits across the country and in many other parts of the world.

She was thus awarded Hilal-i-Imtiaz by President of Pakistan in 2012 alongwith the Pride of Performance Award for her services to the performing arts in Pakistan

Japan's highest civil award was also conferred upon her in recognition of her works.

The eldest among her 10 siblings she was not only a pride for them but also happened to be an equally proud sister of Anwar Maqsood (satirist), Zehra Nigah (poet), Zubaida Tariq (culinary expert), Bunto Kazmi (fashion designer) and Sarah Ali a senior broadcaster who remained associated with BBC Urdu Service for a long period.

According to her family sources Bajia's funeral prayers and burial would take place after Zuhr prayers on Thursday.
