Work on short-duration wheat varieties urged

MULTAN: Secretary Agriculture Shehar Yar Sultan said that short-duration and low heighted wheat varieties would help to enhance income of farmers and improving wheat yield in the country.

In a statement issued here Wednesday, secretary agriculture stated that agriculture scientists contribution for agriculture uplift was praiseworthy.

He said that the scientists would be provided with different facilities. Government will offer them scholarships for higher education in abroad with an objective to improve their capacity building further.

He urged scientists to work on short-duration cotton, pests resistant and varities having capacity to offer more production so that country would be able to earn maximum foreign exchange.

He stressed upon experts to pay focus on research as it was only way to promote agriculture sector.

Director General Agriculture (Research) Abid Mehmood also stated that research was inevitable and need of the hours.

He stated that Pakistan was ranked at fourth number in cotton, fifth in sugarcane and sixth in production of mangoes. The scientists were working on different varieties and hoped that production of these crops would improve further.
