Public awareness imperative to combat AIDS: Shehbaz

LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif has said that collective efforts are needed for controlling AIDS in the society.

In his message on International Day against AIDS on Tuesday, he said the Punjab government was spending a huge amount on the prevention against AIDS and UN's AIDS Control Programme strategy was being implemented for curbing this disease.

He said that medical centres were working for the provision of free advisory, diagnostic and treatment facilities for AIDS.

The Chief Minister said that AIDS was a curable disease and its patients should contact treatment centres set up for this purpose instead of hiding their disease.

He said that there was a need to promote awareness in the people regarding preventive measures against AIDS.

He said that civil society and social organizations would have to support the efforts of the government for controlling AIDS.

He said that protective measures against AIDS could help in prevention against this fatal disease.

Shehbaz Sharif said that blood screening had been made compulsory in the province for safe blood transfusion, adding that free of cost medicines and testing facility was being provided under Punjab AIDS Control Programme.
