Use of modern technology vital to boost yield

LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif has said that development of agriculture sector is the priority of the government and no effort will be spared in this regard.

Addressing a high level meeting through video conference at Civil Secretariat here on Monday, he said that interests of the cultivators would be safeguarded and timely payments to sugarcane growers will be ensured.

The Chief Minister said that agriculture is the backbone of national economy and there was a need for taking short, medium and long term measures for the development of this sector.

He said that prosperity of farmers was essential for development of agriculture and directed concerned authorities to initiate stern action against the sugar mills not making timely payments to the cultivators and payments to the sugarcane growers should be ensured till September 10.

He said that due returns to the farmers for their labour will be ensured and no one will be allowed to usurp their right.

Shahbaz Sharif appreciated the proposal of setting up agriculture commission in Punjab and said that besides authorities of Punjab government representatives of farmers, agri experts and all stakeholders should be included in the commission.

He further said that the use of modern technology was of vital importance for increasing per acre agri production.

He further directed that immediate measures should be taken for the provision of quality seed to the cultivators and there was a need to work in a revolutionary and unique manner for the uplift of agriculture sector and prosperity of farmers.

Secretary Agriculture gave a briefing regarding development of agriculture and the future strategy for the betterment of farmers.

Various proposals for the development of agriculture and solution of problems of cultivators were discussed in detail on the occasion.

The meeting also decided to launch a vigorous campaign against the manufacturers and sellers of spurious pesticides and fertilizers besides holding Kissan Conference in Punjab at the end of September.
