ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court on Friday directed the Secretary Law and Justice Commission to submit comprehensive report on the status and condition of prisoners in jails across the country.

The three-member bench of the apex court headed by Chief Justice Jawwad S. Khawaja and comprising Justice Dost Muhammad Khan and Justice Qazi Faez Isa heard the case regarding status and conditions of prisoners.

During the course of proceedings, the chief justice remarked it was responsibility of the ombudsmen to resolve the problems of prisoners.

He said, a system should be established to monitor and examine jails.

The Secretary Law and Justice told the bench that it was need of the hour to monitor jails and also informed the court that provincial governments of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtoonkhwa have done a lot of work in this regard.

Justice Dost Muhammad remarked that the Khyber Pakhtoonkhwa did not improve security and other arrangements after the breakage of Bannu jail. He observed that discriminatory attitude is meted out to the prisoners by violating Article 25 of the Constitution.

The court directed the Secretary Law and Justice to submit report and adjourned hearing of the case for two weeks.
