KARACHI: A market of 500,000 to 600,000 metric tons of wheat exists in Madagascar, Sudan and Yemen.

This was stated by a delegation of the exporters of the commodity in a meeting with the Sindh Food Minister, Manzoor Hussain Wassan, here on Tuesday.

The members of the delegation were of the view that if the government frame a clear policy then the surplus wheat can be exported to these countries, says an official statement.

The Minister informed the delegation that the provincial government wants to come up with a far-reaching and smooth policy for the export of surplus wheat and its by-products for spurring economy.

He was of the view that the government also desires that the growers get the maximum benefit of the product.

Wassan also pointed out that an effective policy is being framed for the procurement of the wheat directly from the growers at the tehsil level.

He said that there are complaints about getting the benefits of the wheat support price. Therefore, instead of increase the support price, it wants to come up with a clear policy so that the growers can get the benefit.

The Minister called for a data of cash crops such as wheat, cotton and sugarcane at tehsil and lower level. The survey to this effect should be carried out jointly by the departments of Food, Agriculture and Revenue.
