Govt accords high importance to freedom of press: PM

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif Wednesday said that media, being the fourth pillar of state, should play its effective role for the supremacy of Constitution and law, strengthening of democracy and welfare of the country and nation.

He was talking to a delegation of the media representative organizations All Pakistan Newspapers Society (APNS) and the Council of Pakistan Newspapers Editors (CPNE), led by APNS President Hameed Haroon, called on him here at the PM House.

The Prime Minister said the government accords high importance to the freedom of press, but media should use this freedom to play a responsible and constructive role in accordance with the national goals and objectives.

Noting maturity in print media's role, the Prime Minister expressed the hope that electronic media will also strive to use its freedom in line with the national interest and social objectives.

The office bearers of the media organizations lauded the Prime Minister for his efforts in maintaining the country's development and progress, political harmony and national unity.

The delegation also apprised the Prime Minister of the problems, faced by newspapers.

The Prime Minister assured the delegation that these problems would be resolved in the shortest possible time.

The delegation comprised APNS President, Hameed Haroon, CPNE President, Mujeeb ur Rehman Shami, APNS Secretary General, Sarmad Ali and Umar Mujeeb Shami.

Minister for Finance, Muhammad Ishaq Dar, Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Senator Pervaiz Rashid, Special Assistant to PM on National Affairs, Irfan Siddiqui and Advisor to PM on Political Affairs, Dr Asif Kirmani were also present.
