Zafarul Haq briefs coalition senators on advisory body decisions

ISLAMABAD: Leader of the House in Senate Raja Zafarul Haq Monday briefed senators belonging to government coalition parties on the decisions taken by the Business Advisory Committee of the Senate.

He said the body decided to donate Rs 1 million for the victims of a mini-cyclone and torrential rains in Peshawar. It was suggested that each senator would contribute Rs 2000 from his monthly salary to the Senate Relief Fund.

Raja Zafarul Haq said that Rs 3.7 million had already been deposited in the fund and there was need to maintained it on sustainable basis.

He said the advisory committee, which met on Monday, also discussed the possibility of bringing reforms in Senate elections. The parties had been asked to give their input in that regard, he added.

He said since provinces were the electorate of senators, who would therefore maintain close liaison with them.

A delegation of Senators would visit provinces after every three months and hold meetings with chief ministers and ministers to have first hand knowledge about progress in devolution process.

He said minister would brief the House after every three months about the progress made in implementing the report of standing committees. He said the Council of Common Interests should be made more effective and result oriented.

The meeting was attended by 25 senators belonging to Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz, Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Fazl, Functional Muslim League, etc.
