Notice issued to AGP on plea to stop cantonment elections

LAHORE: The Lahore High Court Wednesday issued a notice to Attorney General of Pakistan (AGP) and Advocate General Punjab for March 26 on a petition seeking directions to stop the local body elections in cantonment boards till new delimitations.

Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah issued the notice on a petition filed by Naeem Ahmad.

Earlier, petitioner's counsel arguing before the court submitted that the authorities concerned did not carry out new delimitations for the local body elections in cantonment boards which was against the rules.

He pleaded the court to order new delimitations in cantonment boards to enable the residents to exercise their

right of vote. He also requested the court to stop implementation on election schedule till the new delimitations.

The court after recording initial arguments issued notice to Attorney General of Pakistan and Advocate General Punjab.

Meanwhile, the court also issued notice to cantonment board authorities for March 26 on another petition challenging non- party elections in cantonment boards.

The court would heard eight petitions together regarding the local body elections in cantonment boards on March 26.
