CPI-based inflation decreases 1.01pc in December

ISLAMABAD: The country's Consumer Price Index (CPI) based inflation rate during December 2014 witnessed a decrease of 1.01 percent against November 2014.

On year-on-year basis, the CPI inflation increased by 4.30 percent in December 2014 as compared to same month of last year.

The Wholesale Price Index (WPI) and Sensitive Prices Index (SPI) in December also decreased by 1.89 percent and 1.52 percent respectively when compared to November 2014.

The food items that witnessed increase in the prices during December 2014 over November 2014 included tomatoes (12.47%), chicken (11.76%), moong pulse (3.82%), fish (2.16%), masoor pulse (1.50%) and dry fruits (1.07%).

The food items that witnessed decrease in the prices during the period under review over previous month included potatoes (38.59%), onions (27.71%),fresh vegetables (14.64%), fresh fruits (5.99%), sugar (4.51%), gur (3.8%), rice (3.11%), eggs (2.18%), wheat (1.84%) and vegetable ghee (1.11%).

The non-food items that witnessed increase in prices during the month included woolen readymade garments (2.25%) and postal services (2.14%).

The non-food items that witnessed decrease during the month included motor fuel (6.62%) and kerosene oil (6.53%).

On year-on-year basis the food items that witnessed increase in their prices during December 2014 over same month of last year included moong pulse (21.54%), cigarettes (20.86%), pulse mash (18.94%), fresh fruits (17.88%), fresh vegetables (17.67%), milk powder (13.39%) and pulse masoor (12.69%).

The food items that witnessed decrease during the period under review included onions (50.50%), tomatoes (16.74%) and tea (12.99%).

The non food items prices of which increased in the month as compared to December 2013 included motor vehicle tax (36.71%) and woolen readymade garments (15.05%), education (14.3%) and cotton cloth (13.47%).

The non food items prices of which decreased during the month included kerosene oil (18.01%) and motor fuel (15.5%).

As compared to the December 2013, the trimmed core inflation in December 2014 has been observed at 5.2 percent while it was 8.7 percent during December 2013 over December 2012.

Similarly non-food and non-energy core inflation during the month of December 2014 has been observed as 6.9% against December 2014 while it was 8.5 percent during December 2013 over December 2012.
