Sindh Governor implements Sindh Eye Surgery Act

KARACHI: Governor of Sindh, Dr. Ishrat ul Ebad Khan on Friday endorsed implementation of the Sindh Eye Surgery (Restriction) Act 2014, across the province with immediate effect.

The enforced act is aimed at preventing and prohibiting eye surgery by any person other than qualified and registered medical practitioners, in this case eye surgeon.

According to the act any person not being a registered medical practitioner, who performs eye surgery upon another, whether with or without the latter's consent, shall be punishable with imprisonment for a term that may extend to one year and with fine extendable upto Rs.500,000/-.

The term of imprisonment may extend to three years if the offence results in partial blindness and seven years if the offence results in complete blindness.

Moreover, under the law any person not being a registered medical practitioner who practices or holds himself out, whether directly or by implication, as practicing or being prepared to practice eye surgery, shall be punishable with imprisonment for a term which may be extended to six months and fine that may extend to Rs.50,000/-.
