Task force to be formed to check corruption in jails: Wasan

KARACHI: Sindh Minister for Prisons, Anti-Corruption and Mines and Mineral Development Manzoor Hussain Wasan has said that a task force is being formed to check any corruption in prisons.

He was talking to media persons after inaugurating the newly-constructed office of the IG Prisons Sindh here in Muslimabad behind Dawood Engineering College, on Thursday.

The minister informed that the land for the IG Prison office has been given by the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation in the replacement for the four acres land of the Karachi Central Prisons used for the construction of a flyover at the Jail Chowrangi. The KMC has borne the expenses for the construction of the office, he added.

Manzoor Wasan told the journalists that prisoners involved in heinous crimes will be shifted to other prisons from the Karachi Central Jail.

He further said security staff of jails will be equipped with modern weapons and other equipment.

Answering a question about Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf's (PTI) protest in Karachi, he said the announcement by Imran Khan to shutdown the metropolis was not right. He expressed the hope that matters between the PTI and the government will be resolved.

About Muttahida Qaumi Movement chief Altaf Hussain's recent statement regarding illegal sale of lands in Karachi, he said if the MQM chief asked him he was ready as the Anti-Corruption Minister to investigate illegalities in the sale of lands.

Later, Manzoor Wasan and Chief Secretary Sindh Sajjad Saleem Hotiana attended a briefing by IG Prisons Nusrat Hussain.

Justice (retd) Nasir Aslam Zahid, and senior police officials were present at the ceremony.
