Arrangements finalized for special OPV campaign at 11 UCs of Karachi from Friday

KARACHI: Commissioner of Karachi, Shoaib Ahmad Siddiqui has assured concerned teams of being provided with all needed support including fool proof security during oral polio vaccination (OPV) campaign commencing at the 11 high and super high risk union councils from Friday.

Chairing a meeting at his office he reiterated all polio workers being engaged to vaccinate 2,72,745 under five children pertaining to these 11 UCs of Karachi would be provided absolute security cover besides all other needed and relevant assistance.

The commissioner on the occasion also extensively reviewed the performance of the polio workers and public response during the week long immunization campaign conducted in these 11 UCs from November 15 on-wards and observed with satisfaction that marked decline was registered in the number of refusal cases.

The 11 high risk UCs are those where strong resistance was frequently faced by the teams working to vaccinate children against polio on previous occasions and that also reported confirmed polio cases this year too.

The meeting among others was also attended by the deputy commissioners, EDO -Health, Karachi, Dr. Zafar Ejaz, S.S.P. Ejaz Hashmi, Dr. Saleh Mohammad, the WHO representative looking into these focused campaigns, besides other officials from Unicef and WHO itself.

Karachi Commissioner was informed on the occasion that many of the homes that were found to be closed on previous occasions were also found willing to get their kids vaccinated mainly because of the support extended by area influential and community leader, including imams (prayer leaders) of several mosques located in these UCs.

Authorities were confident that 100% OPV coverage would be achieved during the next campaign, scheduled to begin on December five.
