DISCOs directed to exempt industry from electricity load-shedding

ISLAMABAD: On the direction of Prime Minister, Nawaz Sharif, the Ministry of Water and Power has asked all electricity Distribution Companies to exempt the Industry from load shedding due to shortage of gas in the country.

According to the press release issued here the DISCOS had been directed to immediately implement the plan.

The decision would be effective till the canals closure in the end of December when the hydel generation goes at low level.

The DISCOs have been further directed to implement load management plan for the domestic consumers during the winter season which would keep load shedding at minimum level. The DISCOs will implement the load management plan according to their own worked out schedules.

The decision of uninterrupted power supply to industry has been taken in wake of increased industrial activity especially due to grant of GSP Plus status by the European Union (EU) which had considerably enhanced the country's exports. The Industrial activity had increased manifold as compared to previous years.

It may be noted that representatives of industrial association and bodies had expressed concern over gas shortage during the winter and requested the government to take appropriate measures in this regard.

It is expected that the decision would have far reaching impact on the overall economic development of the country and create job opportunities due to enhanced industrial activity.

The decision has been widely lauded by general public, labour unions, trade and industrial representative bodies.
