Majid Nizami laid to rest

LAHORE: Majid Nizami, a veteran journalist, Pakistan Movement worker, and Editor-in-Chief of dailies Nawai-e-Waqt and The Nation, was buried here at Miani Sahib graveyard on Saturday.

His funeral prayers were offered in Bagh-e-Jinnah, which was attended by Punjab Governor Muhammad Sarwar, Chief Minister Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif, National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayyaz Sadiq, Railways Minister Khawaja Saad Rafiq, Jama'atud Dawa Ameer Hafiz Mohammad Saeed, PPP's Munir Ahmed Khan, CM's Advisor on Health Khawaja Salman Rafiq, parliamentarians, judges, senior journalists and people from various walks of life.

Majid Nizami, who was being treated for cardiac ailment at a local hospital, breathed his last in the wee hours of Saturday.

He was born in a small town of Sangla Hill (Sheikhupura district) in Punjab in 1928. He got a master's degree in political science from the University of Punjab and later proceeded to England to pursue a degree from the University of London, besides a law degree from the Greys Inn.

Nizami took up journalism as a career after the demise of his brother and Nawa-i-Waqt founder Hameed Nizami and served for more than five decades. He had the distinction of being the longest serving editor of a newspaper in the country and celebrated a golden jubilee as editor in February, 2012.

Majid Nizami had been an active memeber of the Pakistan Movement during his student life. Former Prime Minister Liaquat Ali Khan conferred on him the Sword of Honour and the title of Mujahid-e-Tehreek-e-Pakistan in recognition of his services during the Pakistan Movement.

Majid Nizami had been a great champion of human rights, freedom of the press, democracy and the solidarity of Pakistan throughout his life.

He was decorated with various national awards, including 'Sitara-e-Imtiaz', 'Sitara-e- Pakistan', and 'Nishan-e- Imtiaz'.

He was also the member International Press Institute, Member National Geographical Society, Washington (USA), Chairman Press Institute of Pakistan (PIP), former Secretary General Markizia Majlis-e-Iqbal, Chairman Aiwan-e-Iqbal Authority, President All Pakistan Newspapers Society (APNS), President Council of Pakistan Newspapers Editors (CPNE), Chairman Nazria-e-Pakistan Foundation and the Trustee Karkunan-e-Pakistan Trust.

Recently, Majeed Nizami was awarded an honorary doctorate for his services in the field of journalism.
