DIBRUGARH: Polls opened on Monday in six northeastern constituencies on the first day of voting in India's six-week general election, the world's biggest exercise in democracy.

The elections are expected to sweep the opposition Hindu nationalists to power and bring an end to the centre-left Congress party's decade-long rule.

The election ends on May 12 and the results should be announced four days later.
