KARACHI: Governor of Sindh Dr Ishrat-ul-Ebad Khan has deplored that in the city like Karachi appearance of Polio cases is tarnishing the image of not only Sindh but also the entire country despite repeated exercise of polio immunisation campaign on regular basis.

He was talking to a delegation led by President for Global Development Fund for Polio Eradication, Dr Chris Elias here on Monday. The delegation comprised Dr Wiqar Ajmal, Dr Ilyas Duray, Dr Altaf Bosan, Aziz Memon and others.

The Governor said that the Sindh Government is facing many challenges in its effort to clear the province of this crippling disease. He said attacks on Polio workers has caused severe damage to the immunisation programme. However, the government has taken many steps in this regard that has created sense of security among them.

He further said that another reason for increase in the number of polio cases in the provincial metropolis is transfer of population from other parts of the country.

He said the government is not only carrying out immunisation campaign on permanent basis but also ensuring routine immunization for which the city has been divided on union council level to facilitate better monitoring. This exercise is now giving better results.

Leader of the delegation Dr Chris Elias informed the Governor Sindh that Polio has been totally eliminated from the world excepting three countries that included Pakistan, Afghanistan and Nigeria.

He appreciated the steps taken by the Sindh Governor in this regard and hoped these would help improve the country's image.
