Chairman Senate meets Speaker Canadian Senate

ISLAMABAD: Chairman Senate Syed Nayyer Hussain Bokhari Saturday met the Speaker of Senate of Canada, Noel Kinseller at United Nations Headquarters in New York.

In a meeting with the speaker, he said that the recent peaceful transfer of power from one democratic government to another and continuity of the democratic process is contributing to strengthen the democratic and parliamentary institutions in Pakistan.

The Chairman Senate apprised his Canadian counterpart about the parliamentary and democratic developments in Pakistan, said a press release issued here on Saturday.

He underscored the need for increased cooperation between Pakistan and Canada at parliamentary level to share experiences for mutual benefit. Both sides also discussed matters of bilateral significance.

Speaker of Canadian Senate informed the Chairman Senate about the upcoming session of the commonwealth parliamentary speakers/chairmen and presiding officers conference. That will take place in near future.

Pakistan's Parliamentary delegation also participated in the reception of Pakistan permanent representative to United Nations, Masood Khan which was also attended by delegates from different countries.

Chairman Senate held meeting with Secretary General of Inter-Parliamentary Union Anders B. Johnsson and exchanged views on proposals to strengthen the parliamentary and democratic institution.

Chairman said efforts were being taken in Pakistan that focus on several aspects of development, especially removing of inequality between the rich and poor, avoiding environmental damage and facilitating women's participation in social, political and economic fields.
