WASHINGTON: US Vice President Joseph Biden hosted a breakfast meeting with Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif Wednesday morning, ahead of the White House discussions between President Barack Obama and the Pakistani leader in the afternoon.

Prime Minister Sharif is paying a four-day official visit to Washington, his first since assuming power after a convincing parliamentary election victory this year.

His meetings with US officials are focusing on promoting a cooperative relationship between the two sides in trade and economic areas.

A close coordination on regional security situation, particularly on Afghanistan is considered vital to a smooth end to the Afghan war in 2014.
