Food minister ensures quality seed to farmers

ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for National Food Security & Research, Sikandar Hayat Khan Bosan here on Friday directed the Central Seed Testing Lab (CSTL) for accelerating seed quality monitoring to ensure quality seed supply and availability in the market.

The minister inaugurated the renovated and upgraded Central Seed Testing Lab at Federal Seed Certification and Registration Department to ensure seed testing and certification to enhance per acre crop out in the country.

Currently Seed Certification and Registration Department in collaboration with United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) is in a process for accreditation of its Central Seed Testing Lab.

Sikandar Bosan further said that the accreditation of the lab will raise its standard and seed testing reports and results will also be acceptable at international level.

He said that there are many complaints about the sale of sub-standard seed in the market which was affecting the yield of the farmers and directed the department to accelerate quality monitoring and ensure quality seed supply in the market.

The minister emphasized that agriculture is the backbone of national economy and there is an urgent need to modernize agriculture infrastructure to reap the maximum benefits.
