LAHORE: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has said that the government will provide all possible assistance for rehabilitation of flood-hit people.

He said this while speaking at a briefing at Baddu Malhi in Narowal after taking an aerial view of the situation caused by floods in Sialkot‚ Narowal and adjoining areas on Saturday.

The Premier was briefed by concerned authorities regarding the flood situation‚ losses and the steps taken for the rescue and relief of the affected people.

Federal Ministers Pervez Rashid and Ahsan Iqbal also accompanied the Prime Minister.

It may be noted that more than 200 villages have been submerged and standing crops on several acres destroyed due to high flood in River Tawi‚ Nalluh Dek, and Basantar.

Road links and bridges have been washed away by the gushing water in Sialkot and Rajanpur‚ as a result hundreds of people are stranded. More than two dozen villages of Sialkot and Gujranwala also submerged in floodwaters.

Federal Minister for Planning and Development Ahsan Iqbal stressed the need for adopting proactive flood management strategy to minimize the damage. He has already directed Federal Flood Commission to come up with a plan of small storage facilities along with major water courses to avoid flooding.

Later, in a briefing the Punjab Law and Local Bodies Minister Rana Sanaullah briefed Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif about the salient features of new local bodies' law in Punjab.
